” …NEWS re Provincial Online Learning School policies: received Nov 2021

… confirm that one of the key policy changes brought on by Bill 8 will be delayed by a year for independent online schools. In the 2022-23 school year, parents will be able to enrol their children at independent online schools regardless of their location in the province.

This Ministry of Education webpage has been updated to reflect different timelines for public and independent schools.

This is a one year delay, so we will continue to advocate for a solution that gives parents the right to choose their online school regardless of geographic location. However, it is welcome news at this time, “…

Background from Sept 2021 – see below:

CHANGES COMING Bill 8: ‘Changes’ not understood fully at this time. (info below updated Sept 2021). Not known the impact on already established DL schools, especially independent Also, Ministry-imposed regional boundaries may affect students enrolled/registered outside of their neighbourhood or ‘district’. We do not know how this will be implemented, (pre Bill 8 the experienced independent Online schools were working with families province wide). The concern is that the changes will reduce student choice, flexibility, and quality assurance. Also, the hope is that the experienced Independent Online Schools will be able to continue operating as they have by retaining autonomy over their ability to serve families across the province while using the Learning Management Systems and curriculum of their choosing. (see Independent School Act).

Info from above government website:

“2021/22: An interim year to transition:

July 1, 2021: Legislative changes take effect, making it possible for all school districts and authorities to deliver online learning programs.

2021/22 school year:

Distributed learning is now online learning

New interim online learning policies are issued with minor updates to current distributed learning policies

Boards and independent school authorities with current distributed learning agreements will get interim online learning agreements for the 2021/22 school year” (end of quote)

It appears that the above info is for enrolled students. Please understand the definitions / differences for registered and enrolled students:

There are 2 options for home educating :

‘Traditional’ (registered) – pretty well complete educating freedom, and very little / no financial ‘reimbursement’. Not all schools will register traditional homeschoolers. (Section 12).

‘Online Learning (previously called Distance Learning) Enrolled – school / teacher directed education plan, includes supervision, and limited financial reimbursement. Enroll with schools that have a DL program (some public and independent). Changes are coming as mentioned above. Keep informed with your school of choice – may be restricted to your district. (Section 13).

Please check the BCHEA website ( http://bchea.ca/ ) thoroughly for legislative information specific to B.C.

Note: The legal requirement is: school age children are required by law to be registered with a school.

Our field trips are open for non-TLA families, provided there is space. TLA families have priority registration. Non-TLA families will be wait listed until the registration deadline and then informed within 24 hours if there is a spot available, at which point we would require payment either with a credit card or PO number.

Some trips that involve course credits are not open to non-TLA families unless they cross enroll for the course.

Field trips are posted on the website (home page) and families are welcome to check this out regularly.

Click on ‘Our Community’ tab on top of page, then choose ‘events and field trips’.

TLA hosts various educational service providers in our classrooms. These instructors rent TLA classroom space and operate independently from TLA. All providers are screened and have criminal record checks with TLA.
